Omer Eugene Thomas, Sr., 95, died June 10, 2007 in
Iowa City, Iowa.

A visitation in Iowa City will be held
Tuesday, June 12, from 1:00 to 3:00 PM at Lensing’s
Oak Hill, 210 Holiday Road, Coralville, IA.

A second visitation will be held at Moss Service
Funeral Home, 1901 Second Avenue NW, Cullman, Alabama
on Friday, June 15, 2007 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. A
funeral service will be held in the Moss Chapel at
1:00 PM. Following the service, burial will be in
Brooklyn Community Cemetery located near Holly Pond,
AL.

Omer began a man’s work just before his 13th birthday
working at his father’s sawmill. In his youth he also
peddled flavorings, worked construction, worked on the
roads and worked at a plant nursery. When he married
and was raising his family he farmed. In 1954 he
moved to Flint, Michigan, where he worked for General
Motors for 17 years. In 1972 he retired, and he his
wife Cora returned to their farm in Cullman, AL where
he farmed for another 21 years. Omer’s wife died in
1992. He moved to Iowa in 1993 to be near his
daughters. He found pleasure in walking several hours
a day and covered many streets in the Iowa City area.
He moved to Windmill Pointe in Coralville in 2001
where he lived the rest of his life.

Omer was a devoted reader of his Bible and an avid
reader of many newspapers. He enjoyed keeping track
of celestial events such as the phases of the moon,
position of the planets, and times of the sunrise &
sunset. Omer loved his family and enjoyed regaling
everyone with fascinating stories of his many life
experiences.

Omer is survived by his three children: Gail McLure
(John W.) of Iowa City, IA, Corine Perkins of Madison,
WI, Randall Thomas (Murl) of Tulsa, OK, one sister,
Stacy Bailey of Cullman, AL, eight grand children:
David McLure (Karin), John R. McLure (Kris), Sharon
Parramore (Stephen), Phillip Thomas (Marianne),
Celeste Thomas (John Drury), Laura de Turro (Dave
Sibilski), Joel Thomas and Emily Thomas. Omer is also
survived by seven great grandchildren: Matt McLure,
Amanda McLure, John Dorsey "J.D." McLure, Jacob
Thomas, Grete Thomas, Zach Sibilski, and Miranda
Sibilski.

Omer is preceded in death by his parents, his wife,
one son, Omer Eugene Thomas, Jr., seven brothers:
Luther, Mitchell, Lawrence, Walter, Harvey, Carl and
Dorsey, and three sisters: Burma, Jennie and Pearl.
