Geneva was born March 30, 1920, in Boone, Iowa the daughter of William Edgar and Elsie (Steen) Peterson. She married Kenneth W. Hursey on May 10, 1937 at the Rockdale Methodist Church in Dubuque. They were the parents of three daughters; Janet Erickson and Shirley Fouts of Iowa City, and Mary Hursey of Burlington. These daughters survive as well as three grandsons; Lee Erickson of Cedar Rapids, David Erickson and his wife, Lori of Iowa City, and John Erickson also of Iowa City; three granddaughters; Rina Veltri of Kentucky; Mary Simmons of Florida, and Janina Sunjic and her husband, Dragan of Lincoln, NE; and eight great-grandchildren. Her oldest brother, Verne Arthur Peterson of California also survives as does special friends, Carol and Tom Glasgow of Ft. Madison who added much joy to her life for more than sixty years.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her younger brothers, Robert Merle Peterson, William Robert Peterson, and her older sister, Esther May Marks. In 1994 her husband, Kenneth passed away in Burlington, Iowa. Following his death, Geneva moved to Iowa City to live near her daughters.

For fifteen years, Geneva was a Monitor/Supervisor for the Sylvania Electronics Company in Burlington. Following its closure, she took an early retirement opportunity to pursue a life-long dream and learned to play piano and organ. She then spent the following fifteen years teaching piano to students in the Burlington area.

Geneva enjoyed traveling with her husband, daughters and grandchildren and visited sites coast-to-coast and border-to-border over a twenty-year period. She was an avid golf fan and did not miss a Tiger Wood competition on TV. Geneva was also a talented bowler and competed on the National level. Her family enjoyed the results of her masterful crocheting talent.

While residing in Burlington, she was a member of the West Hill Methodist Church and the Burlington Organ Club, serving as the club’s only Historian. She also enjoyed spending quality time with her grandchildren and could be called upon anytime for assistance and companionship.
