June 26, 1912 - August 19, 2002
Elizabeth L. “Betty” Bunge, 90, of 57 Olive Court, University Heights, died unexpectedly Monday evening August 19, 2002, in her home.

Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday at the Unitarian Universalist Society, 10 S. Gilbert Street, with the Reverend Charity Rowley, officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Unitarian Universalist Society, the Head Start Program or the Wabana Chain of Lakes Association, Grand Rapids, Minnesota.

Betty was born June 26, 1912, in Newton, Iowa, the daughter of L. Sydney & Clemma (Graham) Lyday. She grew up in Detroit, Michigan and graduated from Northern High School in Detroit. She then attended Albion College, the University of Michigan – where Betty received her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing. She later received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Iowa. She was a registered nurse and has lived in Iowa City since 1938. Betty married Raymond G. Bunge on June 20, 1936, in Detroit. The couple later divorced.

Betty was a member of Unitarian Universalist Society and was a volunteer coordinator for the Head Start Program, both in Iowa City. She also volunteered at the Iowa City Recreation Department After School Art Project. Betty was loved by her family. She was a wonderful mother, artist, environmentalist and humanist.

Survivors include her children, Dr. Johanna Miller and her partner JoAnn Ulrickson of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Christopher Bunge and his wife Nancy of Granville, Ohio,
Elizabeth “Libby” Capps and her husband Dennis of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Theodore Bunge and his wife, Gail of Avery, California; four grandchildren, Peter, Jess, Tessa, and Brett; and two great-grandchildren.

Her parents, one sister, two brothers, her former husband, and an infant daughter preceded her in death.
