Iowa City, IowaMilo S. Pecina, age 93 of 731 Dearborn Street, Iowa City died Saturday, September 9, 2006, at the Iowa City Care and Rehabilitation Center in Iowa City.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, September 16, 2006, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City with the Reverend William Harnish officiating. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City. Visitation will be on Saturday prior to the services. A memorial fund has been established in Milo’s memory. Milo Stanley Pecina was born November 14, 1912, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa the son of Vincent and Frances (Travnicek) Pecina. On September 13, 1932, he married Emma Hartl in Cedar Rapids. The couple moved to Iowa City in 1936 where for over twenty-eight years they owned and operated Pecina’s Market first downtown on College Street and later on Iowa Avenue. They both worked long and hard hours in the stores, and they did it together. After closing Pecina’s Market, Milo worked for Seaton’s Market for a number of years. He then worked for five years as a parking lot attendant at First National Bank at their downtown drive-in location.
He was an active volunteer at Mercy Hospital since 1987, working in the x-ray waiting area and inpatient visitation. In 1992, Milo Pecina was voted Mercy Hospital Volunteer of the Year and in 1994, Outstanding Older Citizen of Johnson County by the Heritage Agency on Aging. He was a member of the Iowa City Oddfellows Eureka Lodge #44. Milo served on the Iowa City Senior Center Council of Elders and was host guide and volunteer there for many years. He was one of the original coordinators of the Iowa City Senior Center Mailing, The Post. He served on the Iowa City Council of Community Needs, and on the advisory board for the 1st. Club at First National Bank at its inception.
His family includes his; daughter-in-law, Joan Pecina of Waukegan, IL; grandchildren, Julie Ahern and her husband, Craig of Waukegan, IL, Kristin Nielsen and her husband, Mark of Roundlake Beach, IL, and Dr. Jennifer Pecina of Rochester, MN; great-grandchildren, Milo Nielsen, Sydney Nielsen, Emma Ahern, and Sophie Ahern; and a sister, Bessie Vesecky of Key Largo, FL.
Milo was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of nearly 74 years, Emma who died on August 24th of this year, a daughter, Roberta Pecina in 1990 and a son, Richard Pecina in 1995.
