Roland D. “Bud” Schump, age 81 of 413 4th. Avenue, Iowa City died at his home on Tuesday, September 26, 2006.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, September 29, 2006, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City with the Reverend Paul Akin officiating. Burial with Military Honors will be at the Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 4 to 8pm Thursday at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established in Bud’s memory. Roland Duane Schump was born September 22, 1925, in Iowa City the son of Claude and Blanche (Pelechek) Schump. He attended schools in Iowa City and graduated from City High School. During WWII Bud served his country with the 87th. Infantry Division of the United States Army. During his service time he was awarded the Purple Heart, three Battle Stars and the Presidential Citation. Bud was united in marriage to Phyllis M. Connell on June 22, 1949 in the First United Methodist Church in Iowa City. For over thirty years Bud worked for the City of Iowa City in the pollution control department.

He was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church, Moose Lodge, American Legion, and the 87th. Infantry Division Association. For many years, Bud served at a trustee for the Morse Cemetery Association, where he also was caretaker of the cemetery. Bud enjoyed stock car racing, watching the Iowa Hawkeye Football team, and the outdoors, especially hunting.

His family includes his wife of over 57 years, Phyllis; son, Jerry Schump, and grandson, Mike Schump all of Iowa City; sister-in-law, Mary Connell of Solon; several cousins and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Paul and Lowell Schump, brother-in-law, Bill Connell, and sister-in-law, Dorothy Greazel.
