Iowa City, IowaCarl W. Zwicki, of 913 Cottonwood Avenue, Iowa City, died Monday, October 23, 2006, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, after falling ill during his 97th-birthday celebration the night before.
Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Friday at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Funeral services are planned for 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 28, 2006, at the First Christian Church, 900 Lincolnshire Place, Coralville, with Dr. John McKinstry officiating. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City.

www.gayandciha.com.Carl William Zwicki was born October 22, 1909, near Kinross, Iowa, the youngest of five sons of John and Elizabeth (Schwab) Zwicki, formerly of Rheinfelden, Switzerland.
Following graduation from Kinross High School in 1928, he attended Iowa City Commercial College, where he studied accounting. During WWII, he served in the United States Army, stationed in England; it was there that he met his future bride, Sheila A. Collins, when he offered her a seat on a crowded train. After corresponding for three years following the war, Carl proposed to Sheila and persuaded her to make the long journey to this country. On May 1, 1949, they were married at “A Little Bit Of Heaven” chapel in Davenport.Carl worked for many years as a bookkeeper in the Iowa City area, first with Kennedy Auto Market, then with Frantz Construction Company, and finally with Johnson County Ready-Mix in Coralville, before retiring in 1983. In his later years, Carl enjoyed pitching horseshoes and was an avid gardener, storyteller, puzzle-solver, animal-lover, and Frisbee-golfer.
His family includes his loving wife, Sheila; son, Dr. Robert Zwicki, of Iowa City; granddaughter, Krista Fox Kube and her husband, Wayne, of Arlington, MN; and two great-grandchildren, Mya Grace and Bradyn William Kube.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers Ernest, Otto, Emil, and Reno.
