Fern F. Carpenter, age 81 of 1835 Graslon Drive, Iowa City died Monday, October 14, 2002 at the Lone Tree Health Care Center of cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m.,Thursday, October 17, 2002, at the United Presbyterian Church in Lone Tree with the Reverend Ann Rouse officiating. Burial will be at the Lone Tree Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8pm today at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City and from 9am until services on Thursday at the church. Memorial Donations can be made to Iowa City Hospice. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service is caring for Fern’s family and her services.

Fern Florence Meyer was born January 8, 1921 near West Liberty the daughter of August and Alta (Harned) Meyer. She married Warren Charles Carpenter December 17, 1941, near Lone Tree. The couple farmed near Lone Tree for many years. She also worked at various occupations through the years including Ross Dry Goods and the Food Center both in Lone Tree, Fleetway and The Coloring Book in Iowa City, and for over ten years in the Dietary Department of the Unviersity of Iowa retiring in 1991. She and Warren moved from their farm to Iowa City in 1976. Warren died March 20, 1984. Fern remained in her home until moving to the care center in July of this year.

Her family inlcudes two sons, Larry Carpenter of Cedar Rapids, and Robert and his wife, Sherry Carpenter of Coralville; four grandchidlren, Renee and her husband, Marty Beckler, Rochelle and her hsuband, David Sowers, Renda and her husband, Troy Greene, and Ryan Carpenter; seven great-grandchidlren, Dalton, Colton, and Payton Beckler, Alexa and Aubrey Sowers, and Conner and Colby Greene; her brother, Raymond Meyer of Marion.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter, Linda Carpenter on January 15, 1996; two brothers, Harold and Kenneth Meyer, and a sister, Dorothy Meyer.
