Almira M. Henry Wilson, age 86 of 201 N. 1st. Avenue, Iowa City, died Saturday, December 1, 2001 at Solon Nursing Care Center following a brief illness.

Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, December 7, 2001 at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Iowa City, with the Reverend Harlan Gillespie officiating. No visitation is planned, inurnment of her cremated remains will be held at a later date at the Evergreen Cemetery in Jacksonville, Florida. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made in her name to Parish Nurse Services of St. Marks United Methodist Church or to Iowa City Hospice. Gay & Ciha Funeral & Cremation Service of Iowa City is caring for Almira’s services.

She was born May 6, 1915 in Berlin, Maryland, the daughter of Harold and Norma (Berry) Henry. She graduated from Salem, NJ high school, Graduated in 1937 from Bennett College for Women in Greensboro, NC, did graduate work from Brown University and Bowden College. She began her teaching career teaching chemistry and home economics in an all-girls high school in Jacksonville, Florida. She later began with the public schools in Jacksonville teaching chemistry, biology and home economics, having taught for nearly 30 years before her retirement.

Almira was married to Maxie W. Wilson in 1939 in Jacksonville. He died in 1976. She moved to Iowa City in 1986 to be near her daughter and family.

She was a member of the St. Marks United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, University of Iowa Women’s Club, Advisory board of the University of Iowa Community Credit Union’s Senior Citizens group, and the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.

Her family includes a daughter and her husband, N. June and Leodis Davis, formerly of Iowa City, presently living in Kansas City, MO; two sons and their wives, Mikal and Aundrella Hamed of Miami, FL, and Harold and Rita Wilson of Barrington, IL; five grandchildren, Melonie Davis Jones and her husband, Charles, L. Elliott Davis and his wife, Angela, Marc D. Wilson, Baiyina Kahil and her husband, Hanis, and Hanan Hamed; four great-grandchildren, C. Alexander Jones, Michael A. Jones, Morgan Elliott Davis, and Nyah Jasmine Davis.
