Dr. Harvey B. Poepsel , 71, of Iowa City died peacefully Wednesday, December 20, 2006 at UIHC surrounded by his family.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10am, Saturday, December 23, 2006 at St. Patrick’s
parish hall with the Rev. Rudolph Juarez officiating. Burial with military rites provided by local military organizations will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Friends may call Friday from 4 to 7pm at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, where a rosary will be recited at 4pm. In lieu of flowers, the Dr. Harvey B. Poepsel Memorial Fund has been established to benefit the Neurosurgery Department at UIHC and for St. Patrick’s Church. Memorials may be directed to the funeral home, Box 167, Iowa City, Iowa 52244-0167.

Harvey was born April 11, 1935 in Ft. Madison, Iowa, the son of Frank and Kathryn
Phelan Poepsel. Harvey was raised in West Point, Iowa, where his father was a physician.
He was a graduate of Marmion Military Academy in Aurora, Illinois, and a 1957 graduate of Iowa Wesleyan College. On June 9, 1957 he married Mary Ann Conrad at St. Mary’s Church in West Point, Iowa.

Harvey served in Okinawa with the Marine Corps, achieving the rank of Captain. In 1967, he graduated from the College of Dentistry at the University of Iowa with a D.D.S. degree, and in 1969 he completed his residency in pedodontics. He practiced dentistry from 1969 until 1989 at which time he retired. Following retirement, Harvey enjoyed mowing the grounds at Finkbine Golf Course during the summer.

Harvey was a member of St. Patrick’s Church, the American Dental Association, the Iowa Dental Association and the Elks Lodge.

Harvey was a skilled wood craftsman, an avid gardener and sportsman, who enjoyed both hunting and fishing. He cherished the time spent playing games with his grandchildren.

The Poepsel family would like to extend their appreciation to the physicians and nursing staff on 6JC, Neurosurgery floor at UIHC.

Harvey is survived by his wife, Mary Ann and their three daughters, Annie Dailey of Iowa City and her children Kristin and Kody; Maggie (David) Winegarden of Iowa City
and their children Kristi, Molly, Kathy, Alex and Nate; and Barbara (Greg) Sarnecha of
Irvine, California and their children Teddy and James.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two siblings, Maureen and James.
