Ralph C. Fuhrmeister, 86, of 2702 Wayne Avenue in Iowa City, died unexpectedly Saturday, July 15, 2006 at Veterans Administration Medical Center in Iowa City. .

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday at 11:00 am at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City with Reverend Nancy F. English officiating. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at the funeral home. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City. Memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice, The Iowa City Animal Shelter or The Mid-Continent Railway Museum (www.midcontinent.org) in North Freedom, Wisconsin.

Ralph was born January 28, 1920 in Newport Township in Johnson County, the son of Arthur & Etta (Hackbart) Fuhrmeister. Growing up in Iowa City, Ralph graduated from Iowa City High School (as Ralph quoted, “in the front door and out the back door!”) He married Dorothy Breese May 9, 1943. Dorothy died in October of 1969. On November 4, 1974, Ralph married Daphne Yansky.

Ralph worked for Home Town Dairies for 32 years as lead mechanic and shop manager, retiring in 1983. He served in the US Army during WWII in the European Theaters. He was a member of Solon American Legion Post 460 and a life member of Iowa City Moose Lodge #1096.

Survivors include his wife Daphne;
sons, Dan (Deb) Fuhrmeister, Gary (Monica) Fuhrmeister and Steve (Marlene) Fuhrmeister, all of Iowa City;
step-sons, David Yansky of Iowa City

Doug Yansky (Yvette) of Iowa City

Dustin Yansky (Laurie) of San Antonio, Texas
step-daughters, Yvonne Yansky (Richard) Kurtz of Minneapolis

Becky Yansky (Carl) Huard of Danbury, New Hampshire
19 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews;
sister, Mildred Knoke of Iowa City;
special family friend, Lisa Mott of Iowa City

Ralph was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife Dorothy.
