Ambrose Joseph "Sugar" Kane, 90, of Iowa City, died June 13, 2006 at Iowa City Rehabilitation & Health Care Center following a long illness.
Funeral Services will begin at 10:30 a.m., Friday, June 30, at St. Ann's Catholic Church, Long Grove, followed by burial at St. Ann's Cemetery. Father Steve Ebel will officiate. Visitation will take place from 4 to 7 p.m., Thursday, June 29, at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Ave, Iowa City. Memorials can be directed to Alzheimer's Research.
Ambrose was born March 21, 1916, in Long Grove, to Charles and Mary (Looney) Kane. He married Marcella Farrell July 7, 1938, in Grand Mound.
Ambrose was dedicated to his family, doing whatever it took to support his wife and children. His jobs varied from working in a foundry during World War II to delivering Wonder Bread, being a Fuller Brush Man, and running his own successful business as a Sara Lee distributor during the late '50s. He drove semi-tractor trailer trucks until retiring in 1978. Although not a college graduate, he valued education and instilled in his children the importance of higher education; all earned college degrees.
Ambrose's appreciation for the small joys in life was evident to his large family and his ever-growing circle of friends, young and old alike. He also enjoyed reading, daily mall walking, and watching Chicago Cubs baseball games. Nicknamed "Sugar," he was known for his sweet tooth and often proclaimed, "I only like two kinds of pie - hot and cold." Always ready with a joke or a smile, he served as an inspiration to everyone around him.
He is survived by his sister Mary Agnes Wisor of Camanche, Iowa; five daughters, Betty Peters of Campbell, Calif., Sheila Kane (John Soldano) of Medford, Mass., Theresa Kane of Walworth, Wisc., Patty Kane (Patrick Hogan) and Kate Kane, both of Iowa City; three sons, David (Mary McGrath) of Annapolis, Md., Gerry (Patty) of Moss Beach, Calif., and Jack (Ann) East Earl, Penn.; 22 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
Ambrose was preceded in death by his, wife Marcella, sons Charles and Daniel, sisters, Veronica Kane and Julia Callahan, and brother Charles.
