INSTANTLY KILLED.
----
William G. Marshall Found by Roadside
on the Way to His Farm
:Tuesday Morning.
[Red River Valley News. Glyndon, Minn., November 8.]
One of the worst accidents, if not the worst, in Glyndon's history occurred Tuesday morning and caused the death of William G. Marshall, a respected citizen and farmer who has lived here for the past year.
He had left his home that morning to drive to his farm, three miles north of the village, and carried a gun, a 12-gauge hammer shot gun, with him to shoot game. That was the last seen of him alive. About ten o'clock, an hour after word was brought in by a stranger that the body of a man was lying by the roadside a mile north of town. Some of the citizens went to the place and a horrible sight met their gaze. Mr. Marshall, evidently, had stopped to shoot at something, had tied his team to a tree, then gone to the rear of his wagon for his gun. In taking the gun out, pulling it barrel end toward him, one hammer caught and discarged [sic] the load into his forehead, the gun being close enough to burn the flesh. Death had been instantaneous; the unfortunate man never knowing anything about it. Coroner Darrow was telephoned for permission to remove the body to the village and later he[?] the coroner, came from Moorhead to investigate. An inquest was deemed unnecessary and Mr. Darrow, after taking testimony from a few, pronounced it an accident.
The funeral was held yesterday from the residence, being under auspices of the local camps, M. W. A. and R. N. A., of which the deceased was a prominent member. It was largely attended by friends and citizens who wished to pay their respects to the memory of the departed one. Rev. Bassett preached an eloquent sermon and a choir sang. The remains were taken to Iowa City, Ia., for interment at the former home of the family.
The bereaved family, a widow and two children, have the deepest sympathy of the whole community and assistance has been extended in every way possible. The blow is a most terrible one to them.
