Hawkeyes Kattie and Meghan ... Plan to Keep Playing Soccer and Studying Together
By Tim Groff

Twin sisters Kattie and Meghan Redlinger have been rooming together since they were newborns and it's been working out pretty well. So they've decided no to mix things up too much.
The twin sisters were a prominent establishment in the sports arenas at the Mid-Prairie high school for the past four years - playing basketball in the winter, running track and playing soccer in the spring. They've see a lot of success, helping their basketball team qualify to the State Tournament this past season, running at State in Des Moines for the Track team, and taking their soccer team to a Substate soccer game two seasons in a row.
They have also had success taking their high school classes and studying together. This fall, they'll be taking their soccer skills and their studying skills to Iowa City where they're planning to walk on for the Iowa Soccer program and study Radiation Sciences.
They're going to be living together, of course, and will have the same schedule - at least for the first semester.
"We wanted to stick together and help figure out college for each other," said Meghan. "We've done that all through high school, so we wanted to be sure to do that for the first semester of college so we could get a handle on college and how to live."
"Since we have soccer too, we want to get a handle on how to study together and manage our time wisely so we don't mess up," said Kattie. "We'll have a lot of time on our hands, more time than high school, that's for sure."
With Science and Gen-Ed classes, as well as soccer practice and other college activities, the twins might find their time filling up pretty fast.

Playing soccer together:

The twins have been playing organized soccer together since they were in first grade. They say there's not any actual 'ESP' going on, but they're pretty good at knowing what the other is going to do.
"I always know what she's going to do," said Kattie, who plays a midfield position. "And I can usually make the perfect pass to her and it all works out. We just have so much fun together."
Meghan, who plays a forward position, said she knows when her sister is getting ready for a big pass.
"She gets wide-eyed,' said Meghan. "She gets this big grin on her face or something because she sees something open or something so you better look for it."
"That means you's better work hard to get it," said Kattie.
The twins get really competitive on the field and admitted that sometimes things get out of hand.
"We don't like to be #2 to each other, we like to be #1. And during a soccer game we yell at each other and get really emotional about it," said Meghan.
"When Meghan doesn't work hard I get really mad. If I play a perfect ball and she doesn't get to it I'll be really upset about it." said Kattie. "One time during the game I sat down on the ground and pulled grass out because I was so upset at her. She missed three goals in a row!" "But we still love each other," they added in unison.

College dreams:

The pair plans to be ultrasound techs, maybe set up an ultrasound business together, or study to become radiologists in the future. Their soccer trail at Iowa gives them two years of eligibility as walk-on players, but if they're recruited beyond their sophomore year, they'll adjust their study schedule to focus on soccer.
"I hope I don't bench warm the whole time," said Kattie. "I really just want to make sure I get to play and just have fun."
The twins look forward to possibly helping their hometown Hawkeyes beat some rivals.
"You see all these Big Ten teams and you always think, 'Oh, I want to play them', well now it's a reality. We are going to be playing them," said Meghan.
Check the women's soccer schedule at hawkeyesports.com and if you get a chance, take a quick trip to Iowa City to see the girls play.
