Amanda the Panda lights up the sky

The Sept. 18 first annual Light up the Night event at the Sharon Center United Methodist Church was a success, says organizer Sara O'Donnell. The hope was to raise $5,000, which would cover the expenses of five Iowa families to receive a year of grief support from Amanda the Panda. The even raised $10,500, which means 10 families will be supported through activities and events like Camp Amanda, monthly support groups and family events during the year.
The event was in memory of Abby Miller, the 3-year-old daughter or Lowell and Dorothy Miller, who died earlier in the year. The Miller family attended Camp Amanda in April.
Amanda the Panda is a family grief center located in Des Moines. It provides free grief counseling for families and individuals who have lost loved ones. The organization was founded 35 years ago and continues to serve families all over the state.
The Millers will be traveling to Des Moines on Nov. 16 to attend a special 35th anniversary proclamation signing at Gov. Terry Branstad's office.
