Sharon Center Church to host outdoor concert for hurricane relief
by David Namanny

They're calling it "Gospel Fest" over in Sharon Center. It's a live outdoor concert that will take place Sunday, September 18 from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Sharon Center United Methodist Church. And thanks to the generosity of several local sponsors, all proceeds will go to benefit the victims of Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana and Mississippi.
The line-up of musicians includes Jonathon Miller of Kalona, Adam and Annie Dohrn of Parkersburg, Apostle of Kalona, Mary Roberts-Rathje of Swisher, Fresh Air Band of Coralville, Sharon Praise of Sharon Center and the Charlie Stone Band of Joetown.
A concession stand at the site on church grounds north of Kalona will serve hamburgers, pork burgers, homemade pie and ice cream, with all sale proceeds from the food sales also going toward hurricane relief.
As well as music, food and fun, folks can also make freewill offerings to the effort, which will be administered through the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) organization. Sharon Center United Methodist Church Pastor, Doug Cue, said that 100 percent of freewill offerings will go directly to Katrina victims.
Last but not least, an empty semi-trailer from Stutsman, Inc. will be parked at the site to fill with hurricane relief items. There is still a desperate need for blankets, bottled water, and health kits, which include 1 new hand towel, one new wash cloth, one bar of soap, six band aids, toothpaste, one new sealed toothbrush and one nail clipper with file. Organizers explain that the trailer will be trucked to the official UMCOR depot in Baldwin, Louisiana for distribution.
"Several months before Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf region, we were planning on having an outdoor gospel concert at the church," said Cue. "We were not planning on it being a fund raiser or a revenue-generating event ... we just have folks that love to play and sing. So, initially it started as a fun fellowship opportunity for the folks in our church and surrounding churches."
Pastor Cue said that when the media revealed the impact and devastation of the hurricane, organizers decided to change the scenario.
"We decided that maybe we weren't looking to make this a fundraiser for the church, but there certainly are a lot of folks in the Gulf who could use it," concluded Cue.
Sponsors of the even include Absolute Graphics and Signs of Hills, Bill Wirth (State Farm Insurance) of Coralville, Eldon C. Stutsman, Inc. of Hills, Living Waters Graphics of Kalona, Miller Electric of Sharon Center and Kalona, Sharon Telephone Company, Sharon Center United Methodist Church and Sharon Center United Methodist Youth.
Those with any questions about the local hurricane relief efforts at Sharon Center can contact Pastor Cue at (319)-683-2564.
