In late August 1874, Reverend William Watkins' mare died suddenly. A preacher without a horse was a disaster. Rev. Watkins lived in Iowa City, but he was minister of the Welsh Congregational Church in Old Man's Creek about six miles away. A horse was also essential to enable him to preach in surrounding counties, perform marriages in members" homes, not to mention that winter was approaching. Mr. W.J. Davis took on the task of collecting donations to replace the horse. A party was held in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Tudor. A large crowd filled "every nook and corner although the house is very wide." Mrs. Elizabeth Tudor, step-mother to Edward Tudor, gave up her room for the occasion. There was music provided by an organ, singing, conversation, debate and food: turkeys chickens, cakes, pies, coffee and tea. The ladies culinary skills were beyond description. Ninety five dollars was raised. Mrs. Mary Jones, widow of the late Rev. Maurice M. Jones, and her daughters contributed a quilt. Disaster averted.
