SUDDEN DEATH
James Mhana Dropped Dead in His Store Saturday Evening
HEART FAILURE THE CAUSE

Had Lived in Iowa City for More Than Thirty Years
Veteran of the Civil War

JAMES MAHANA, one of Iowa City’s pioneer citizens, dropped dead Saturday evening between 4 and 5 o'clock. Mr. Mahana was apparently in his usual health until the moment of his death which occurred without any warning. He was engaged at his work in the firm of Bashnagel and Mahana and the summons came without a moments notice. His physicians give heart trouble as the cause of death.

James Mahana was born in Pennsylvania in 1837. When the war broke out he entered with an Ohio regiment and for his excellent service he was made a captain before being mustered out. He came to Iowa City in 1870 and has resided here since that time continuously. During his residence in Iowa City he has been identified with many movements in the interest of the city, and his departure will be regretted by everybody. He was an upright substantial citizen and he will be missed.

He is survived by a widow and sister and two brothers. Mrs. Sadie Luse resides in Iowa City; Bradley Mahana lives in Creston, and the other brother resides in St. Joseph, MO.

The funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, from the residence, under the auspices of Kosiusco I.O.O.F. lodge. The services will be conducted by the Rev. DeWitt Clinton. The burial will be private.

Note: On 6 March 1903 the Iowa City Republican published an article entitled “A SUDDEN CALL”. This was a weekly newspaper published every Friday.

James Mahana was a son of Captain Bradley Mahana and Catherine Seals Mahana.
