Annual Songfest to be held in Sharon Center United Methodist Church August 17

Sponsored by the Council of Mid-Prairie Churches, the annual Songfest is one of the top drawing events during the summer.
This year, the 2003 version takes place in the Sharon Center United Methodist Church, 2804 520th St. SW, rural Kalona. The program starts at 5 p.m. with an ice cream social, followed by the Songfest itself at 6:30 p.m. There is no charge, but a freewill offering will be taken.
The program features music and drama provided by groups from the member churches.
The church, which recently made a major addition, is fully handicapped accessible. This year marks the first time Songfest has been in the Sharon Center Church.
the church dates to 1869, making it one of the oldest congregations in the area, and pre-dates Kalona itself by a decade.
By the time it celebrated its centennial, it noted how it had grown from being part of the days of the circuit riding minister, been re-named twice, weathered war and depression and expanded and re-built its facilities.
Like many, the church started as a simple wooden frame structure, was added onto, then was fully re-built in brick. The addition, shown on the left in the above photograph, has virtually doubled the size of the church. Which means it can very nicely accommodate the Songfest.
