MCCADDON

Dubuque Democratic Herald – Dec. 2, 1863

Capt. J. W. McCaddon of Iowa City was dismissed from the service of the United States for having expressed a belief that the leading men in the administration and Federal Army were prolonging the war for gain and had no desire to bring it to a speedy close, Capt. McCaddon should have been more discreet. Above all things, truth is most distasteful to the creatures in authority. Call Lincoln the second Washington and prove it – the whole range of offices is open to you for your selection, but once give utterance to the truth and you have dared altogether too much. The administration will resent nothing so quick as one of these, “slanderous little facts.”
