DEATH OF FATHER HAYDEN.
We had but brief time last week to mention the sad death of Rev. John HAYDEN. He was killed by the engine of a freight train on the “Q” road Tuesday evening at 6:20, between the station of Krum and Cedar Creek. Mr. HAYDEN retired from active religious work several years ago and has been living on a farm with his son, James F., near Krum. About the only exercise he indulged in was fishing in Cedar Creek, where he would spend many hours. He was nearly always accompanied by one or more of his grandchildren, but at the time he met his death was without escort. He was returning from the creek and had sat down on the track when the engine struck him and threw him from the road. His head was badly crushed, but there were no injuries on the body. A jury was impaneled Wednesday morning by Coroner Evans, consisting of W. H. WOOLERY, J. N. Slimmer and John Heald. After examination of the remains the jury returned a verdict “that the said John HAYDEN came to his death by being struck and knocked off the track by a freight train of the C. B. & Q. railroad company on the afternoon of the 10th of July instant.

Rev. John Hayden was known to almost the entire Methodist ministry of Iowa. He was indeed a patriarch in the service of the Master. He was born in 1812 in Hamilton County, Ohio, and has been in the ministry nearly 50 years. In 1823 he was married to Miss Sarah McCotter in Indiana and was the father of 10 children – Dr. J. W.; James F., and Mrs. J. W. Davenport residing in this county.
