DEATH OF A PIONEER. William BROWN, who died at the home of a son near Batavia the 25th inst., was a pioneer resident of Jefferson County.
Born in Belfast, Ireland, in Feb. 1814, came to U.S. as a young man, and entered land near Abingdon in 1840. Four years later he was married to Lucretia SPURLOCK who died in 1895. They were the parents of seven children, four of whom are living -- Mrs. Eliza McCART and Mrs. Elizabeth FULTON of Brighton; Wm. BROWN of Ottumwa, and John A. BROWN of Locust Grove Township, at whose home the father died.
Mr. BROWN had been a continuous resident of Jefferson County all these years, except from 1873-1876, when he lived in Missouri. Member Christian Church for more than 50 years and was always an excellent man and citizen. Funeral held at Batavia conducted by Rev. Lee Walker of Brighton.
