Page 2, Column 4DEATH OF A VETERAN SOLDIER.
William GANTZ, a son of Mr, and Mrs. John GANTZ of this city, died at his home in Locust Grove township Wednesday after a long illness from disease and wounds, the result of his army service. Mr. GANTZ was a native of Franklin County, Ohio, and came to this county with his father's family in 1850. He was in his native state when the war of the rebellion broke out and enlisted under the first call for troops to suppress it. He was in the disastrous battle of Bull's Run, and upon his discharge, after four month's service, returned to Iowa. He re-enlisted in this city in Company F, Third Iowa Calvary, August 26th, 1861, and was in the service continuously until 1865, when he was mustered out. Mr. GANTZ saw much hard service as a soldier and was wounded several times. In one engagement with the rebels he was struck by rifle balls in both wrists, and in another had his horse shot out from under him and his leg badly crushed....A wife and three grown children, two sons and a daughter, survive him, Mr. GANTZ was in the 54th year of his age. The remains were interred Friday, Rev, W. S. Moore of Brookville conducting the funeral service.
