Obituary of Jacob Vaught, as published in the Monroe (Iowa) Mirror, Jan. 1916. Sent by Eveleen Vaught Ammer of Monroe.
Jacob VAUGHT, son of William and Elizabeth VAUGHT, was born Dec. 27 1834 in the state of Indiana. He was one of a family of 13 children. When 15 years of age he moved to Jefferson County, this state, with his parents. On Feb 28 1861 he was married to Nancy Evaline DOLE. To this union nine children were born, four of whom have passed to the other world, Charles Leonidas, Lillie, Pearl, Lulu Alice, and Harry Granvill. Those who survive are: Mrs. John (Leota) WESTERWOUDT, Newton, Iowa; Mrs. A. J. (Rose Ann) COWMAN, Toledo, Ohio; Mr. Joseph Nelson VAUGHT, Fairmount, Iowa; Mrs. Douglas (Bessie) MARTIN, Lark, North Dakota; and Mrs. Rolla R. (Estelle) SCHENCK, Monroe, Iowa.
He with his wife and child moved to Jasper County at the close of the Civil War. They settled near Fairmount, and here he has resided ever since that time. The wife and mother died Apr 25 1885.
He was always of a cheerful and uncomplaining disposition, his one effort was to encourage all he came in contact with. He was a member of the Methodist church at Fairmount, Iowa. Early in the war, in 1862, he enlisted at Fairfield, Jefferson County, Iowa, and was mustered into the service at Keokuk, as a private of Co. B, 19th Iowa Infantry Vols. He participated in a number of battles, including the siege of Vicksburg, Miss. in 1863. A part of the regiment was captured in Texas and was confined in prison for nearly one year. He took part in the campaign against Mobile, Alabama, including the assaults of the Spanish Fort, was mustered out of the service at Mobile, Alabama July 10 1865 and honorably discharged at the close of the war. He died at the home of this daughter, Mrs. John WESTERWOUDT at Newton, Iowa, Jan. 7 1916 aged 81 years 11 days. Burial at Monroe, Iowa.
