Carl W. JAY, 72, Dies Suddenly

Carl William JAY, 72, well-known Fairfield resident, died suddenly early this morning at his home at 306 E. Washington street. JAY became ill after midnight and died shortly after a physician had been summoned.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Weston Behner funeral home in charge of Dr. L. L. Weis. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery where Masonic rites will be held.

A resident of Fairfield since 1924, JAY operated the star mail route from Fairfield to Packwood. He also served the community for several years as a justice of the peace.

He was born Oct. 18, 1881 in Henry county, the son of Asbury and Mary BARTON JAY. He was married to Mary BALL Nov. 16, 1910. Before moving to Fairfield, JAY operated a farm near Oakland Mills.

JAY was an active Mason and held many local and state offices. He was past master of Clinton Lodge No. 15 and the oldest district lecturer of the lodge in point of service. He had served as district lecturer since 1934.

He was a high priest of McCord chapter No. 5 and a past royal arch captain of the Grand chapter of the state of Iowa. He was also captain-general of the Gethsemane Commandry No. 59 and a past patron or (sic) the Order of Eastern Star.

JAY is survived by his wife and one brother, Bert A. JAY of Des Moines.
