John F. GIMBEL, 89, of Fairfield died at 1:10 p.m. Sunday, November 6, 2005, at Jefferson County Hospital in Fairfield.
The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Marvin Robeck officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery in Fairfield.
Family visitation will be from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Behner Funeral Home. Friends are welcome to sign the Book of Condolence beginning at 9 a.m. Tuesday.
Memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church or to the donor's choice.

Mr. GIMBEL was born October 8, 1916, in Mendota, Ill. John was the son of Reinhard and Clara (ETZBACH) GIMBEL. John married Margretta ROOT on September 8, 1946, at Grace Lutheran Church in Watertown, South Dakota.
John GIMBEL graduated from Mendota High School and attended the University of Alaska. He graduated from Elgin Watchmakers College in Elgin, Ill. John was employed as a watchmaker in the Etzbach Jewelry Store in Mendota until 1941.
John served in the United States Air Force during WWII, from 1941 to 1945. He came to Fairfield in 1946 where he was employed as a watchmaker and jeweler until 1949 for McLean Jewelry Store here in Fairfield. In 1949, he took over ownership and thereafter it was known as Gimbel's Jewelers. John retired in 1986, but continued to work part-time for several years as a jeweler in the same store which is now owned by his son-in-law, Rick Small.
John was a Midwest sales representative for A & Z Hayward Company, Providence, Rhode Island for 20 years.
John was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Fairfield, The Fairfield Elks Lodge #1192, Clinton Masonic AF&AM #15 and KAABA Shrine Temple of Davenport, Ia.
John is survived by his wife, Margretta and their daughter Christine SMALL and her husband, Rick, of Fairfield. John was grandfather to Tom SMALL of West Des Moines and Carrie ROACH and her husband Ben, also of West Des Moines. John was great-grandfather to Jacob ROACH.
John was predeceased by his parents and two sisters, Josephine BENEDICT and Dorothy OLSON.
