J. HOERNER Dies At 84

John A. HOERNER, retired Fairfield school teacher and longtime resident of the Fairfield community, died at 10:40 a.m. today at the Jefferson County Hospital.

He had been in failing health for several months and had entered the hospital Monday.

The body is at the Raymond Funeral Home where last rites are pending.

HOERNER had been in the teaching profession for 39 years, 33 of those years in Fairfield, when he retired. He came to Fairfield in 1924 and served as head football and basketball coach during his first two years. His 1925 football team was undefeated.

He also organized the first golf team at FHS and was the only person to coach that sport until his retirement. He announced his retirement from the Fairfield school system in March, 1957.

HOERNER received his BA degree at McPherson College, McPherson, Kan., and had taken graduate work at the University of Iowa, Colorado University and Chicago University.

He began his teaching career in 1917 in West Liberty, Kan., coming to Fairfield from Reinbeck in 1924.

John A. HOERNER was born Feb. 2, 1890, in Illinois. He was 84 at the time of his death. His widow, the former Margaret SIMMONS, is also a former Fairfield high school teacher. One son and a daughter also survive.

J. HOERNER Rites Set

Last rites for John A. HOERNER, 84, retired Fairfield school teacher, will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the Raymond Funeral Home with the Rev. Wayne Bartruff officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

HOERNER died at 10:40 a.m. Tuesday at the Jefferson County Hospital. He had been in failing health the past seven months.

John A. HOERNER was born Feb. 2, 1890, in Auburn, Ill. He was the son of Daniel S. and Mary HARNLY HOERNER.

He was reared and educated in Auburn and graduated from McPherson College at McPherson, Kan. He also took graduate work at the University of Iowa, Colorado University and Chicago University.

He began his teaching career in 1917. He came to the Fairfield school system in 1924 and retired in 1957.

His marriage to Margaret SIMMONS, also a former Fairfield school teacher, took place July 26, 1928, in Fairfield. HOERNER was a member of the United Methodist Church, an active member of the Brosis Class and in its Bible Fund of which he was chairman. He served in many other capacities in the church.

HOERNER was also a past president of the Fairfield Lions Club and received his 50-year membership pin in that organization last spring; and a member of the Wit and Wisdom Club.

In addition to his widow he is survived by one son, Robert Jack, Shaker Heights, Ohio; a daughter, Mrs. Mary Lou PITZER, Glenwood; six grandchildren and a sister, Della HOERNER, McPherson, Kan.

He was preceded in death by a brother and three sisters.

Members of the family would appreciate memorials to the Cancer Fund.

--Mrs. Robert HOERNER and three children of Shaker Heights, Ohio, and her mother, Mrs. Phillip CHANDLER of Cedar Rapids came to Fairfield Monday morning for a visit in the home of Mrs. John HOERNER. They left this morning at the same time their hostess and her daughter, Mrs. John PITZER departed for Glenwood, Mary Lou's home. The local Mrs. HOERNER will return home Friday.

YOU ARE HEREBY NOTIFIED THAT ON THE 22ND DAY OF JULY, 1974, THE LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF JOHN A. HOERNER DECEASED BEARING DATE OF THE 10TH DAY OF JANUARY, 1966, WAS ADMITTED TO PROBATE IN THE ABOVE NAMED COURT AND THAT MARGARET S. HOERNER WAS APPOINTED EXECUTOR OF SAID ESTATE.

NOTICE IS FURTHER GIVEN THAT ANY ACTION TO SET ASIDE SAID WILL MUST BE BROUGHT IN THE DISTRICT COURT OF SAID COUNTY WITHIN ONE YEAR FROM THE DATE OF THE SECOND PUBLICATION OF THIS NOTICE, OR THEREAFTER BE FOREVER BARRED.

NOTICE IS FURTHER GIVEN THAT ALL PERSONS INDEBTED TO SAID ESTATE ARE REQUESTED TO MAKE IMMEDIATE PAYMENT TO THE UNDERSIGNED, AND CREDITORS HAVING CLAIMS AGAINST SAID ESTATE SHALL FILE THEM WITH THE CLERK OF THE ABOVE NAMED DISTRICT COURT, AS PROVIDED BY LAW, DULY AUTHENTICATED, FOR ALLOWANCE; AND UNLESS SO FILED WITHIN SIX MONTHS FROM THE SECOND PUBLICATION OF THIS NOTICE (UNLESS OTHERWISE ALLOWED OR PAID) SUCH CLAIM SHALL THEREAFTER BE FOREVER BARRED.
