Death of John HOCHULY

Rev. John HOCHULY, the oldest resident clergyman of his denomination in Iowa, died at his home in this city early Friday morning. He had not been in rugged health for some time, but his final illness dated back only three or four days. Mr. HOCHULY was a native of the Canton of Aargau, Switzerland. He was born August 6th, 1823, and as a child of tender years came to the United States with his parents. The family resided at Allegheny, Penn., for several years, and the young man grew to maturity in that state and in Ohio. In early life Mr. HOCHULY had determined to enter the ministry of the Episcopal church, and the education which was necessary to fit him for his chosen work he found he must obtain through his own efforts and at his own expense. He was equal to every emergency, however, and enrolled himself as a student in Kenyon College at Gambler, Ohio. He graduated from this institution in 1852, and three years later completed the theological course of Bexley Hall and was ordained to the ministry by Bishop C. P. McIlvaine. Mr. HOCHULY's first parishes were Columbia and Strongsville, Ohio, where he remained a year or two. In 1857 he came to Fairfield and organized St. Peter's church, the Episcopal society of this city, with whose history he was closely identified during the remainder of his life. His parish was weak in numbers and many difficult tasks lay before him. He was compelled to seek aid for the erection of the church edifice abroad, but his efforts were attended by a high degree of success. Remaining here until 1864, Mr. HOCHULY was then appointed chaplain of the military prison at Rock Island, where several thousand prisoners of war were confined. The appointment came to him through Edwin M. Stanton, secretary of war, and his salary was paid by a member of the noted Apsinwall family of New York. In 1966 Mr. HOCHULY took charge of the churches of his denomination at Ft. Dodge and Boonesboro, and in 1868 of those at Fox Lake and Plymouth, Wis. Here he remained until 1872, when he engaged at similar work at Danville, Ill. In 1876 he again came to Fairfield, where he took up the labors he dropped so many years ago, and which has since been his home. The life of this excellent man was a busy one. His work was largely that of a missionary, and his duties as pastor were supplemented almost everywhere by the difficult tasks of founding and maintaining new and struggling churches. But the energy and the industry of the man were equal to every emergency, and he never seemed to grow tired in his work. As a man and citizen Mr. HOCHULY was very highly esteemed. As a pastor his relations with all his fellow laborers were pleasant and cordial. He did his duty as he saw it, and in every phase of life he represented a high type of manhood.

October 13th, 1863, Mr. HOCHULY was married to Miss Samantha L. LEGGETT of this city, who survives him. Four children were born to them, Mamie, Mattie, Theodore and Bessie, all of whom are yet at home. Funeral services were held at St. Peter's church Saturday afternoon. They were conducted by Rev. J. H. Lloyd, rector of the Ottumwa Episcopal church, and were very largely attended. The remains were borne to the grave by the pastors of the city churches, Hon. James F. Wilson and President Smith of Parsons College.
