J. Alvin HIATT, 67, native of Jefferson County and a well-known Jefferson County farmer, died suddenly about 10 p.m. Monday night of a heart attack while attending a square dance at the Junior Ag Building.
He was taken to the Jefferson County Hospital by ambulance where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Last rites will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the First Christian Church with the Rev. Ned Gillum officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. The casket will be taken from the Raymond Funeral Home to the church at noon.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.
HIATT was an active member in the First Christian Church and had served in several organizations associated with agriculture. He was a member of the Church Board and had served as an Elder.
He had served as a township committeeman from Cedar Township under the ASC program through 1968; he had served as a member of the Farmers Home Administration board; he had served as Center Township treasurer and a member of the school board in that township as well as serving as a member of the Fairfield School Board some years ago.
Born Aug. 7, 1901, he was the son of O. L. and Flora CHATTERTON HIATT. He was born on a farm south of Fairfield, was reared and educated in this community and graduated from the Fairfield High School.
Survivors include his wife, Irene; one daughter, Mrs. Robert SUTHERLIN, Anchorage, Alaska; one son, Bruce, Fairfield; ten grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Robert FISCHER and Mrs. Carl SCHIEDEL, both of Fairfield.
HIATT was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter.

Dr. and Mrs. Robert SUTHERLIN arrived Wednesday from their home in Anchorage, Alaska, having been called here by the death of Mrs. SUTHERLIN's father, J. Alvin HIATT, who died suddenly Monday night.
Dr. SUTHERLIN is the son of Mrs. Ruth SUTHERLIN, Fairfield. He will return to Anchorage this coming weekend but his wife will remain a week longer.
Others from a distance who attended the HIATT funeral Thursday included Mr. and Mrs. Dick FISCHER, Burlington; Mr. and Mrs. Paul Schupick, Burlington.
Mrs. Brown Stonebraker, Stockport, Mrs. Blanche Johnston, Stockport; Mrs. Mabel Collins, McAllister, Okla.; and Mr. and Mrs. Larry Hedger, Chicago.
