C. A. HERRING, RETIRED FROM BUSINESS, DIES

Charles A. HERRING, 80, prominent business man in Fairfield for 40 years, died at the Jefferson county hospital at 8:00 p.m. yesterday where he had been a patient for the past week. He had been in failing health for the past several months, and seriously ill since last week.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 2:30 p.m. at the family home, 302 West Boardway (sic), where Mr. and Mrs. HERRING had resided since 1905. Rev. A. P. Keast will officiate, with interment in Evergreen cemetery. The family requests that flowers be omitted.

Charles A. HERRING was born July 27, 1863, at Richland, Iowa, the son of the late Jesse A. and Priscilla HERRING. He came to Fairfield with his parents when he was quite young.

Mr. HERRING's 40 years in business, and his connection with the Fairfield Glove and Mitten Company as president for the past several years, has earned him many lasting friends in Fairfield, as well as in many other communities.

He started on his career in the grocery business 66 years ago at the age of 14 when he took the job as delivery boy for the late Joseph Bradley. The store, located on the west side of the square where the Iowa Electric office is now located, later became Mr. HERRING's own when he purchased the same business in 1887. He continued in business at the same location until Mr. HERRING retired in 1923, selling out to E. G. Fligg.

Mr. HERRING and his wife celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on Sept. 27 when nearly 300 friends called at their home to offer them congratulations. People from all walks of life called at their home to honor the well known couple.

Since his retirement in 1923, the HERRING's (sic) have spent 14 winters in California, where they made a host of friends who will join this community in mourning Mr. HERRING's death.

Charles HERRING and Flora CHESTER were married 50 years ago last September 27 in the home of the bride's parents located at 112 West Burlington street where the Hoskins funeral home is now located.

He is survived by his wife, and several cousins. The body was taken to the Murray Funeral home.
