Husband of Dead Woman In Hospital With Painful WoundsTwo persons are dead today and a third lies in the Jefferson County Hospital painfully injured, as a result of an automobile-truck accident two miles west of Fairfield, on Highway 34, at 8:45 o'clock Saturday night.
The dead are: Mrs. Eldon HALL, 24, of 605 West Jackson street, and John Manley, 46, of 609 West Jackson street, owner and driver of the passenger vehicle involved in the wreck. Mrs. HALL was thrown clear of the machine and died instantly from a fractured skull. Other injuries included a broken collar bone, a broken arm and broken hip.
Mr. Manley died at the hospital about 5:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon after being kept alive for hours beyond the expectations of attending physicians. He was severely injured internally, including a bad blood clot in the abdomen and a bowl (sic - bowel) rupture, and had a fractured thigh.
Eldon HALL, 25, husband of the dead woman, is in the hospital now. He has both legs injured, and possibly other injuries.
The Manley vehicle, carrying nine persons, was headed westward and encountered a truck driven by Rap Reuter of West Point on the slight hill just east of the Charley Whitham place, west of the city. No reports are available as to the speed of the vehicles, but this is expected to be brought out in an inquest called by County Coroner Roy A. McGuire for Tuesday morning.
Riding in the car with Mrs. HALL, Mr. HALL and Mr. Manley were six other people: Mrs. Laura HALL and Miss Anna HALL, mother and sister of Eldon HALL, 606 West Jackson street; Mrs. Wilma Bailey, 612 West Jackson street; Snowden Decker, 51 North Maple; Miss Edith Whitaker, 610 West Jackson street, and Ernest Lathrop, brother of Mrs. Bailey, 612 West Jackson.
Mrs. Laura HALL suffered an injured wrist. Mrs. Bailey was injured to the extent of a bruised back. Miss Whitaker was bruised and cut over one eye. Miss Anna HALL received a bump on the head, a bruise over one eye, and a slightly sprained arm. Two others in the machine were not injured.
The party in the Manley machine, a 1923 Buick touring car, was enroute to Batavia to attend a dance. Mr. Reuter was headed towards his home at West Point, after a trip to Ottumwa. His machine was only slightly damaged and he was unhurt.
Mrs. HALL was sitting on her husband's lap at the left side of the rear seat of the Manley machine at the time of the accident.
Mr. and Mrs. HALL had no children. She is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Amos CHRISTNER, and a sister Ruby, aged 12, all of Blakesburg.
Mr. Manley, who has been employed digging coal at the Carmichael mine, is survived by his wife and ten children. The children are: Mrs. Roy Bruders, Andy, Cecil, Floyd, Arnold, Virginia, Aletha, Darlene, Manford, and Karlene, all of Fairfield. One son, Jack, preceded him in death.
Funeral services for Mrs. HALL will be held at 2:00 p.m. tomorrow at the Hoskins Funeral Home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
Eldon HALL has been working for Harry Mitchell of Packwood, lately, members of his family said. He moved here from Unionville, Mo., about six years ago, it was stated.
Funeral services for Mr. Manley have not yet been arranged. Mrs. HALL's body is at the Hoskins Funeral home. The body of Mr. Manley is at the Campbell Funeral home.
Wilbur R. Eicher, state highway patrolman, was on a bus that was following the Reuter truck at the time of the accident. He took immediate charge of the situation, and was aided a few minutes later by Deputy Sheriff Herb Goodale, who was called.
Traffic on Highway 34 was tied up for some time following the smash.
