Patrick GRIFFIN, a noted horse-man, died at his home Saturday morning in this city shortly after 9 o'clock. The sudden death was a great surprise upon the neighborhood. The deceased was out training his horse on the fair ground on the evening of June 30th, when his horse shied at something and turned suddenly around twisting the axle of the cart and throwing Mr. GRIFFIN out upon the hard ground. It was found that his limb was badly broken and he was taken home. Since then he has apparently been getting better, when suddenly his death came. He was the owner of several speed horses that in times past has won for him considerable money at St. Louis and elsewhere. The deceased leaves a wife and a family of four small children. The funeral services were held at the Catholic church yesterday morning at nine o'clock.

Stricken Down Without Warning.

Patrick GRIFFIN died very suddenly at his home in this city Saturday morning about 9:15. He had been confined to his room for six week past by a broken limb, but had been in excellent health, as far as those about him knew, and on the morning of his death was particularly bright and cheerful and hopeful that he would be about in a few days. He was taken ill about 9 o'clock and fifteen minutes later was a corpse. His physician attributes death to an affection of the heart caused by a disease of the kidneys from which he had suffered for some time past. Deceased was a son of the late Dennis GRIFFIN. He was born at Syracuse, N. Y., May 15th, 1857, and came to this city with his parents three or four years later. Most of the after years of his life were spent in Fairfield. Mr. GRIFFIN was married to Miss Ellen CONNOR at Oskaloosa in 1886, and was the father of five children, four of whom, with the mother, survive him. He was a man of cheerful disposition and kindly manner and was very popular with his associates. He had many warm friends in his old home who will regret his death and sorrow with the stricken family. The remains were interred in this city Monday morning, Rev. Gail of Davenport conducting the funeral services.

Sudden Death of Patrick GRIFFIN.

The sudden death of Mr. Patrick GRIFFIN, which occurred shortly after nine o'clock last Saturday morning, was a surprise to both friends and relatives. Six weeks ago Mr. GRIFFIN was thrown from a cart while driving around the track at the fair grounds, and since then has been confined to his bed with a broken limb. The splints had recently been removed from the injured member and it was expected he would soon be able to be around again. Indeed he was able to move about on crutches and was expecting to be up and about the next day. The suddennness of Mr. GRIFFIN's death came as a very great shock to his family and immediate relatives, who were entirely unprepared for it. The cause of his death was pronounced by the attending physician to be diabetes, a disease of the kidneys. The deceased was known to be affected with this disease and two weeks before his death had been quite serious, but had recovered from that attack.

The deceased was a son of the late Dennis GRIFFIN. He was born in Syracuse, New York, May 15, 1857, and came to Iowa with his parents when a mere boy. He has lived in this city for many years and is well known all over the county. He was married in 1886 to Miss Ellen CONNOR at Oskloosa, and she with four children survive him, to whom the sympathy of many friends is extended.

The funeral took place from St. Mary's Catholic church, in this city, Monday morning at nine o'clock. Rev. Father Gaule condcted the services, Father Nodler, the local priest, being prevented by sickness from doing so.

There were in attendance at the funeral, Mrs. C. J. DOBBINS and children, of Council Bluffs, Iowa; James GRIFFIN, of St. Louis, Mo.; Mrs. Brennan and Miss Anna Dougherty, of Ottumwa; M. F. Tobin, of Burlington, and Mrs. Lizzie Reynolds and Miss Kate Johnson, of Mt. Pleasant.
