Lewis Everett GRAF

Lewis Everett GRAF, 72, died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 1993, at Parkview Care Center.

He was born Dec. 27, 1920, at Jefferson County Hospital, the son of Lewis John and Lucille RIVEY GRAF of Lockridge. He was educated at Lockridge schools, attended Parsons College for two years and graduated from the State University of Iowa in 1942 with a bachelor of science degree in commerce. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard Reserve and served four years during World War II, attaining the rank of ensign.

GRAF worked in the accounting profession in Des Moines, passed the certified public accountant exam in 1948 and enrolled that year in the Graduate School of Business, University of Michigan. He received his master of business administration degree in 1949.

He married Viola M. TURNER of Madrid on Dec. 22, 1948, at the First United Methodist Church in Des Moines.

GRAF opened an accounting practice in Fairfield and operated Graf & Company until his retirement in 1985. He was a lifelong member of the Iowa Society of Certified Public Accountants and the American Institute of Accountants.

He also was a member of First Lutheran Church; a director of Iowa State Bank and Trust Co.; past president of Rotary and the Fairfield Shrine Club; a member of Elks Lodge No. 1192, Clinton Lodge No. 15 AF & AM, KAABA Shrine Temple, Des Moines Scottish Rite, the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Fairfield Golf and Country Club. He served as an assistant commissioner with the Jefferson County Soil and Water Conservation District and on the board of the Greater Jefferson County Foundation.

Surviving are his wife; three daughters, Kathryn HOVE of Solon, Mary Lou SCHILDROTH of Thornton, and Marcia GEVOCK of Fairfield; nine grandchildren; a brother, Larry; and one nephew. His parents and one brother, Otto, preceded him in death.

The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Lutheran Church, the Rev. John Meyer officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Family visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Behner Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the First Lutheran Church radio ministry, Jefferson County Hospice, the Freater Jefferson County Foundation or the Fairfield Public Library building fund.
