Joyce Darlene CLINE MASAOAY, age 95, of Seymour, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 6, 2023, at the Corydon Specialty Care Center in Wayne County, Iowa.

Joyce was born February 14, 1928, in Jefferson County, Iowa, at the Orchard Grove family home to Harold T. and Vivian CREW CLINE. The farm is located near Round Prairie Baptist Church near Lockridge. She graduated from Lockridge High School in 1946. Joyce accepted Christ as her Saviour at age 8 and was baptized in Cedar Creek near the church. In the fall of 1946, Joyce began her teaching career at the Clay Hill one-room country school and in 1947, taught at Frog Pond School. This was a time when teachers stayed in the home of the students.

Joyce continued her education at Parsons College, Fairfield, Iowa; Baptist Bible Fellowship College, Ft. Worth, Texas; Baptist Bible College, Springfield, Missouri, graduating in 1952. Joyce received her BA in Education Degree from Azusa Pacific College in 1966.

In 1968, Joyce married Bonifacio MASAOAY. Joyce and Bon adopted a son they named Philip Russell in 1970. The marriage ended in divorce in 1973. Joyce returned to her home state of Iowa with Philip to live. Joyce taught students in the Iowa and California school systems. She also spent time teaching the children of missionary families in Mexico and the Philippines. In 1990, Joyce retired from 33 years of teaching.

In the 1990s, Joyce was Mayor in Seymour for four years and served a term on City Council. Following this, she drove her vehicles for friends in the Amish Community for 18 years, retiring a second time in 2019.

Joyce is survived by son, Philip MASAOAY of Seymour; granddaughter, Te'lyse MASAOAY and fiancée , Henry, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; sisters, Judith WRIGHT, Fairfield Bay, Arkansas and Sharon DEAVER of Chariton; sister-in-law, Janet CLINE of Osceola, Iowa. In additional (sic), she is survived by 9 nephews and nieces; 19 great- nieces and -nephews; and 20 great-great-nieces and -nephews.

Family members who preceded Joyce in death are sister, Minnette CLINE HARVEY; brother, Vaughn CLINE; brothers-in-law, Jerry WRIGHT, Wallace HARVEY, and Serle DEAVER; great-niece, Sarah Michelle PALMER; an, nephew, Curtis HARVEY (sic).

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 9, 2023, at the Glasgow Cemetery south of Lockridge, with Pastor Kevin Dice, officiating of the Round Prairie Baptist Church. Joyce will be buried next to her parents. Pallbearers will be son, Philip; grfaet-nieces (sic), Alicia HARVEY RICH and Alicia HARVEY; and nephews, Lyle HARVEY and Tom DEAVER.

Glasgow Cemetery is where Joyce's grandparents John Thomas CLINE (d. 1934) and Hannah (sic - Hanna) HANSON CLINE (d. 1946), an immigrant from Sweden, are buried. A military memorial stone is placed in the Cemetery for Joyce's great-grandfather, John Leonard CLINE (d. 1865) who was part of Sherman's Army in the South during the Civil War. John Leonard's wife, Martha CLINE HALL (d. 1917) remarried and is buried at Glasgow. This cemetery is also where Joyce's great-great-grandparents William CLINE (d. 1866) and Rachel LEONARD CLINE (d.1893) are buried. The CLINE's came to Southeast Iowa from Tazewell County, Illinois in 1839. William died in 1866, (a year after his son died during the Civil War) from injuries he received in a wagon accident.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at the Seymour United Methodist Church on Saturday, March 18, at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Shawn LaRue, officiating.
