Merle Andrew "Skip" Nelson, 81, of 404 S. Fourth St., died at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 4, 2005, at his home.

The funeral is scheduled at 10 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Mike Metz officiating. Burial will be in Packwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6:30-8 p.m. Tuesday at Behner Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church or American Diabetes Association.

Mr. Nelson was born March 22, 1924, in Abingdon, the son of Joseph Ray and Clara Smith Nelson. He married Iva Arlene Mercer April 9, 1944, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

Mr. Nelson lived most of his life in Jefferson County with a few years spent in Colorado. He graduated from Packwood High School in 1941.

He farmed and was a self-employed general contractor for 25 years. He was a member of First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife of Fairfield; two sons, Robert Nelson and wife Barbara of Kansas City, Mo., and Tim Nelson and wife Sherri of Libertyville; one daughter, Pamela Wolfe and husband Ron of Bowdle, S.D.; one brother, Chet Nelson of Hedrick; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two infant sons; two brothers, Wallace and Morris Nelson; and one sister, Martha Nelson.
