Charles C. FULTON

Charles C. FULTON, 92, of the Minneapolis area, died Wednesday, Nov. 4, 1992, at Trevilla Nursing Home in Golden Valley, Minn. He had lived much of the past 14 years with his son in Minneapolis.

The body was cremated and a graveside service was conducted Saturday at Evergreen Cemetery in Fairfield. A memorial has been established to Eldercare of Minneapolis.

A native of Fairfield, FULTON studied at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He began his career in the Twin Cities in 1924 as a chemist for what is today the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. His main job was to analyze bootlegged liquor during Prohibition.

During courtroom trials he met Elliot Ness and Marty Leahart, Prohibition agents known as the Untouchables. He was named chief chemist of the United Nations' narcotics laboratory in 1948, working in New York City, then Switzerland. He retired from the U.N. in 1958 and worked for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in Washington, the office of chief medical examiner in New York City, the Addiction Services Agency, and the office of the chief medical examiner in New Jersey.

He retired again at 70, moved to Venice, Fla., and raised a variety of fowl, Black Angus cattle, and alligators.

His first wife, Gladys, died in 1956, and his second wife, Teresa, died in 1978. Surviving are two sons, Charles L. of Philadelphia, Gene of Minneapolis; a daughter, Elizabeth Ann MACELI of Rensselaer, N.Y.; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a sister, Susan WELTY of Beloit, Wis., who attended the Fairfield service.
