FairfieldCharlene Mae FAIRCHILD, 83, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 19, 2022. She was surrounded by her family and holding hands with her husband of nearly 67 years.
She was born in Abingdon, IA, on June 25, 1938, to Charles Eugene and Dorothy Esther (MYERS) CRAWFORD. Charlene grew up in the Fairfield area with her siblings Marjory (Willis), Melvin (Dorothy), Linda (Keith) and Gene (Karen). She graduated from Fairfield High School in 1956 and married the love of her life Bert Junior FAIRCHILD on June 25, 1955, at the Pleasant Plain Friends Church.
She worked at Places and Universal Producing both in Fairfield until she and Bert bought the Dairy Bar. They worked side by side 19 years before they sold it. After selling the Dairy Bar, she started working at Hy-Vee, retiring in 2011 after 20 years of service.
Charlene was loving mother to Doug (Peggy) and Phillip (Hillary). She adored her five grands, Anya, Holli, Emily, Jacob and Ryan; and their seven great-grands, Marshall, Bayla, Cornelia, Berenger, Caspian, Henri and Theo. Charlene was an amazing, soft-spoken, kind-hearted, welcoming, and Godly woman. She was a very special person in everyone's lives. Charlene was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.
Charlene was an excellent cook and baker. A few of her favorites were pies, caramel brownies and her grandma's sugar cookies. She and Bert would make up to 15 different baked goods to have during the holidays and family gatherings. While working at Hy-Vee, she and Bert would take several big goodie trays to share with other Hy-Vee employees.
Charlene's other hobbies included reading, puzzles of all sorts, loving and serving others.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Dorothy CRAWFORD; in-laws, Bertrum Charles and Lillian May FAIRCHILD; four brothers-in-law and three sisters-in-law.
Visitation for family and friends will be 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Sunday, April 24, 2022, at Behner Funeral Home.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, April 25, 2022, at Fairfield Friends Church with Pastor John Wilbur officiating. Burial will follow in Packwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Camp Courageous or towards a bench at Old Threshers. Cards and memorials may be mailed to Bert FAIRCHILD, 506 E. Fillmore, Fairfield, IA 52556.
