April 3, 1934 -- Jan. 3, 2022

Jerry LAWSON, 87, a respected Phoenix attorney, passed away peacefully on Jan. 3, 2022, in Scottsdale, Ariz., surrounded by his family. Jerry was born and raised in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He was an honors graduate of Abraham Lincoln High School (Class of 1953). He attended the University of Iowa on a merit scholarship, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1957. While at the University of Iowa, he was admitted into the Phi Delta Theta social fraternity. After leaving the University of Iowa, Jerry joined the Hawkeye Alumni association. He attended the University of Arizona College of Law, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Laws Degree in 1961. While attending the University of Arizona, he was admitted to the Phi Delta Phi law fraternity. After graduation, he became a member of the Arizona Wildcat Club. He served as a clerk for the Honorable Ross Jones, and then as Assistant Attorney General for the State of Arizona from 1962-1965. He went on to join the firm of Evans, Kitchel & Jenckes, where he concentrated in commercial real estate finance, lending and foreclosure. He was named partner at EK&J in January 1973. He later went on to practice law at the firm of McCabe O'Donnell until he retired in 2018.

Jerry and Mary Nell (SNYDER) LAWSON were married in December, 1969 in Denver, Colo. He was a member of Valley Presbyterian Church for many years. He was preceded in death by his parents - Roy Franklin LAWSON (1979) and Laura Louise SIMPSON LAWSON (1996). They were both longtime Iowa educators/high school administrators and Roy was a baseball and football coach. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Dr. Frank D. LAWSON (Doug) (1973) and his wife, Gayle LAWSON (2008).

He is survived by his wife, Mary Nell LAWSON of Scottsdale, Ariz.; by his children, Margaret (Molly) LAWSON of Phoenix, Ariz., Lauren LAWSON of Round Rock, Texas, and Roy LAWSON (Kellie) of Scottsdale, Ariz.; by his grandchildren, Hiley BOSQUEZ, Hayden BOSQUEZ, Lucas LAWSON and Harper LAWSON; by his brother-in-law, Richard SNYDER (Connie) of Versailles, Ky.; his niece, Linda RUGE (Joe) of Fort Dodge, Iowa; his niece, Diane FRIESTH (Grant) of Des Moines, Iowa.

Jerry was a HUGE sports fan. He was a longtime Phoenix Suns basketball, Arizona Diamondbacks baseball and University of Arizona football season ticket holder. He enjoyed his yearly baseball trips to Los Angeles. He took ski trips with his kids and friends. And he reserved a few fall weekends for trips to Tucson and Iowa City to watch his Wildcats and Hawkeyes. Being there for his family and spending time with his family was his most important priority. He loved to travel. He traveled around the states and the world with his wife, his family, his friends and his children.

The family will be holding a celebration of life service for Jerry on Saturday, Jan. 29, in Scottsdale, Ariz. The family will hold a graveside service in Fairfield, Iowa, later in the year, where his ashes will be interred.
