JEAN MCGIFFIN MARTIN
Stuart, Fla.

Jean McGIFFIN MARTIN passed away Jan. 10, 2022, at Treasure Coast Hospice in Stuart, Fla. She was 88.

Born Jean Petite McGIFFIN on Aug. 25, 1933, in Fairfield, Iowa, the daughter of the late Don McGIFFIN and Grace McGIFFIN BARWISE, she was born into a pioneer newspaper family and was the granddaughter of Elizabeth and W.W. JUNKIN, owner and editor of the Fairfield Ledger from 1853-1903. W.W. used the Ledger as an editorial voice to support the candidacy of Abraham Lincoln and was a bitter enemy of slavery, the Confederacy and the Democrat Party - in about that order. The newspaper remained in the family's ownership (one of the few remaining daily family newspapers) until it was sold after the death in Santiago, Spain, of Jean's brother Jim in 1990.

A 1951 graduate of Fairfield High School and National Honor Society member, Jean was active in music, speech and drama and attended the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Mich. She served on the staff of MacJannet Camp, Lac D'Annecy at Talloires Haute Savoire in the French Alps. She graduated cum laude from Pomona College in Claremont, Calif., majoring in Art History and English and went on to the Stanford University Graduate School. She was later employed as an editorial assistant by Harper Brothers in New York City.

She married Hadley N. MARTIN (Nick) on April 27, 1958, in Fairfield, Iowa. A member of the First Presbyterian Church in Fairfield, she was elected to Session and was a member of the Chancel Choir. She served on the Jefferson County Library Board and was president of her P.E.O. Chapter. For the years of 1975 to 1980, she lived in Beardstown, Ill., where she was a member of Quester's Club.

She enjoyed flower gardens real and imagined, and always had a twinkle in her eye describing her Irish "luck." In her younger years, she played bridge, golf and loved antiquing throughout Iowa with her bosom buddy Fairfield friend, Nan Cameron.

She was a volunteer at the Blake Library in Stuart. She carefully compiled family albums chronicling the journey West of her JUNKIN/McGIFFIN pioneer ancestors, which she donated as historical documents of interest to the Fairfield Public Library.

The family wishes to thank her devoted friends, the medical community and staff of Addington Place Stuart and all her health care workers and most especially Treasure Coast Hospice.

She is survived by her three children, Matthew Donald MARTIN of Woodland Park, Colo., Thomas Edward MARTIN of Deerfield Beach, Fla., daughter, Elizabeth Grace MARTIN of Greensboro, N.C.; three grandchildren, Alta MARTIN ROGERS, Nicholas MARTIN and Matthew MARTIN; great-grandson, Thomas ROGERS; nephews, Tom McGIFFIN and Todd McGIFFIN; and niece, Janet FARBER; daughters-in-law, Connie and Mary MARTIN; and sons-in-law, J. Bary BOYLE; and grandson-in-law, Thomas ROGERS; and granddaughter-in-law, Katie LEIGH MARTIN.

Contributions may be made to Treasure Coast Hospice, Stuart Fla.; First Presbyterian Church, 200 S. Main, Fairfield, IA 52556; or Immanuel Lutheran Church, 2655 Immanuel Drive, Palm City, Fla.
