Well Known Resident of Fairfield Passed Away This Morning.George A. DROZ, one of the oldest and most highly respected residents of Jefferson county passed away this morning about three o'clock after a few hours illness at his home on South Court street.
Mr. DROZ was born in Alsace, France March 3, 1836 and came with his parents to America in April 1847, landing at New Orleans after a voyage of sixty one days on the ocean. They proceeded up the Mississippi to St. Louis where they settled.
In 1851 the family moved to Jefferson county where the father and mother both died, having attained the ripe old age of 77 and 73 years respectively.
The son, George DROZ, was educated in the schools of France, but after arriving in America set about gathering up the English text books which he studied with a will, thus familiarizing himself with the American tongue. In later years his knowledge of the French language proved of great advantage to him and his friends as he was frequently called upon to act as interpreter in the courts.
On July 30, 1857 Mr. DROZ was united in marriage to Miss Mary V. RAINICHE, also a native of Alsace, France, who came to this country with her mother in 1854.
Mr. and Mrs. DROZ began their married life on a farm near this city which was their home until about five years ago when they moved to the city.
Ten children were born to them, who are as follows: Louis J., Francis M. and Mrs. John ROTH, of this city; Dr. George E. DROZ of Keota; John P. DROZ, of Denver, Colo.; Joseph C., Mrs. Frank WITOSKY (sic - WITKOSKY) and Adolph, all residing in Jefferson county; Mrs. F. X. SCHAEFERS, of Waverly; and Miss Virginia, who lives at home. All the children and their mother survive Mr. DROZ and have the sympathies of hosts of friends in their sad bereavement.
Mr. DROZ may well be termed a self made man, having but a few dollars in the world when he first saw America. At the time of his death he owned many acres of Jefferson county land and was in prosperous circumstances.
The funeral will be held Wednesday morning at ten o'clock at Saint Mary's Catholic church, of which all the family are devout members.

The funeral of the late George A. DROZ, who died Monday morning, was held this morning at ten o'clock at Saint Mary's Catholic church. It was largely attended by relatives and friends of the deceased.
Among the numerous beautiful floral offering surrounding the casket was one emblematic of a Sickle and Sheaf sent by the Old Settlers Association of Jefferson County, of which organization the deceased is a member. Accompanying this offering were the following words of sympathy:--
We extend our sympathy in this time of your bereavement and give you an emblem portraying the life of your husband and father. How he, as an Old Settler gathered in the sheaves he had created, so has the Creator of all gathered in the ripened good old man to his final home.
