Death of William H. DAVIS.

After many months of ill health, William H. DAVIS died at his home in this city Thursday. Mr. DAVIS was a native of Ohio, born April 24th, 1843. He grew to manhood in his native state, enlisted in the Eighteenth Ohio infantry at the outbreak of the Civil war, but was discharged because of ill health before his term of service was completed. His residence in Jefferson county dated back to 1865, and he lived for several years on farms in Buchanan and Liberty townships. When failing health unfitted him for the labors of outdoor life, he came to this city and engaged in the grocery trade. For almost sixteen years he was a well known business man of Fairfield. March 10th, 1864, Mr. DAVIS was married to Rhoda A. CASS in Ohio. She died here in 1880. They were the parents of nine children, all of whom are living. All but two, Allen H. of Red Lodge, Mon., and Mrs. H. C. PHILLIPS of Spokane, Wash., were with him in his last hours. Homer C. and Rhoda reside in this city, W. L. at Republic, Kan., Carl C, at Davenport, J. E, at Waterloo, Mrs. J. W. FARRELL at Fairbury, Ill., and Mrs. C. T. ROLAND at Des Moines. In 1881 Mr. DAVIS was married to Mrs Amelia McDONALD, who survives him. Mr. DAVIS had been a member of the Christian church for almost a third of a century. He was a man of excellent character and of high standing in the community. His honesty and integrity were above question, and he discharged faithfully all the duties which came to him. Funeral services were held in this city Friday afternoon, conducted by Rev. H. S. Gilliam, pastor of the Christian church.

Comrade W. H. DAVIS.

DIED--At his late home on N. Main street, in this city, in the 61st year of his age Wm. H. DAVIS, Thursday, June 18. Two years ago he had hemorrhage of the brain and while he partially recovered he did not fully. His last sickness covered a period of about ten days. At his bed side during his last hours were his wife, seven children and two step daughters. He was born in Ohio and from that state enlisted in the army at the age of 18, being a member of the 18th Inft. from which he was discharged on account of disability. He was married in Ohio in 1864 to Miss Rhoda CASS and shortly thereafter came to and settled in Jefferson county. There were born to them five sons and four daughters all of whom are living and seven were at his funeral: Allen H., Red Lodge, Mont., and Mrs. Dr. PHILLIPS, Spokand Falls, Washington were absent, W. L. of Republic, Kas., Mrs. J. W. FARRELL, Fairbury, Ill., Mrs. C. ROLAND, Des Moines, J. E. of Waterloo, C. C. of Davenport, H. C. and Rhoda of this city were present. He lost his wife by death in 1880 and in 1881 he was married to Mrs. Amelia McDONALD who survives him. He was for many years in the mercantile business from which he retired five years ago. He was a member of the Christian church and lived consistently with his prosession. His son, Carl C. is pastor of the Christian church of Davenport and is successful as a minister. Our city has lost an upright citizen, the church a valued member and his family an affectionate father and husband. The funeral discourse was delivered by the pastor, Rev. H. S. Gilliam to an audience that filled the auditorium of the church, at 3 o'clock Friday the 19th and the remains laid to rest in the Evergreen cemetery. Peace to his ashes.
