Fairfield Child Dies In Mishap

Carrie Jane DAVIS, 1-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Larry B. DAVIS, died this morning when her head was caught between the side rail and springs of her crib.

Dr. C. F. Watson, Jefferson county medical examiner, said death was caused by strangulation. The mishap occurred in an upstairs bedroom of the DAVIS home at 306 S. Court St.

Mrs. DAVIS found the child at 11:30 a.m. She had been put to bed for a morning nap at 10 a.m. The time of death was placed at about 10:30 a.m.

A screw was missing from the lower corner of the crib, allowing the child's body to slip down between the edge of the bed and the side rail. The child's face was toward the bed and the back of her head was caught between two vertical rails, preventing her from turning her head laterally.

The child's feet were touching the floor, but she was unable to push herself free. Mrs. DAVIS immediately called the family physician. Chief of Police Russell Simmons and the medical examiner were summoned a short time later.

The child was born March 8, 1963. Mr. and Mrs. DAVIS are also the parents of a son, Robbie, 4.

The body is at the Raymond Funeral home where arrangements are pending.
