PAUL DABNER DIED TUESDAY AT HOSPITAL
Stricken with infection; was graduate of Parsons college

Paul DABNER, 30, well-known Fairfield young man, passed away at the Jefferson county hospital Tuesday at 4 p.m. from streptococcic infection.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 2:30 p.m. at the African Methodist Episcopal church in charge of the Rev. A. L. Preston. Interment will be in Evergreen cemetery. The body was taken to the Murray Funeral Home.

He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William M. DABNER, 501 East Hempstead; by five brothers, Raymond, Wardell, William, Jr., and Walter, and by four sisters, Lucille, Stella, Thelma and Georgia.

He was born in Fairfield on January 4, 1909, and had lived his entire life in this city.

About a month ago he had the misfortune to run a steel splinter in his hand while working at the Iowa Malleable Iron company where he was employed. Although the steel was extracted and the wound treated it developed infection about a week afterwards. His condition became serious and he was taken to the Jefferson county hospital.

For a while he failed to improve but about a week ago there was a change and his friends believed the crisis to be past. Later, however, he took a sudden turn for the worse.

Mr. DABNER had a host of friends about the city and was very well known in southeastern Iowa soft ball circles. He was the successful manager of the Bradshaw softball team and also handled the Iowa Malleable basketball team.

He graduated from Fairfield High School in 1927 and was an exceptionally good student and active in many different events, including athletics.

Some time after his graduation he attended Parsons college and graduated from that institution in the spring of 1934. While he was in college he was a member of the Dramatics club and took an active part in affairs of the organization. He also wrote several sketches. He majored in history at Parsons and was an outstanding student.

Letters To the Editor

Editor Ledger:

With deepest sympathy for his family and utmost grief in our hearts, we, the Bradshaw softball team, wish to take this opportunity to publicly express our respect and affection for our friend and manager, Paul DABNER, who passed away Wednesday afternoon.

It is hard to realize that Paul will not be with us this spring. We will miss the bright smile that flashed when we met on the street; the way he calmed us when we "blew-up" over umpire's decisions; the encouraging pat on the back when we were playing a bad game; his ringing laughter over a good joke and many more characteristics that endeared him to his friends.

We are deeply grateful for the opportunity that was ours to work with him in softball, for to know him well was an inspiration for better living.

At a meeting of the team Wednesday evening, it was voted to keep last season's team intact, in so far as possible, in memory of Paul. To a man, the players vowed that they would dedicate every game this season to him and play each game in a manner of which he would be pleased.

We know that as we play, our most enthusiastic booster will be watching and encouraging us to do our best, and when we look toward the coach's box at third base, though others may not see him there, to us he will be as vividly present as ever.

To you, Paul, we erect this monument.

--The Bradshaw Softball Team
