Mariruth LEWIS CUMMINGS

Former Fairfield resident Mariruth LEWIS CUMMINGS, 82, of Iowa City, died Sunday, July 10, 1994, in Iowa City (note: in Johnson Co., IA).

The service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Behner Funeral Home, with the Rev. Peg Egbert officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Family visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Friends may begin calling Tuesday afternoon. Memorials have been established to the Fairfield High School Library, the Fairfield Public Library and the American Heart Association.

Mrs. CUMMINGS was born June 15, 1912, in Clive, the daughter of Robert R. and Annabelle STRATHERN LEWIS. She graduated from Warrensburg (Mo.) High School, and from Central Missouri State Teachers College. She also did graduate work at Iowa State University and the University of Iowa.

She began her teaching career in Greenville, Mo., and later taught in Keosauqua, Libertyville, Pleasant Plain and Packwood. She started teaching in the Fairfield School District in 1935, and retired from there in 1972.

On May 22, 1938, she married Earl W. CUMMINGS in Ames. They lived in West Liberty and Ames before moving to Fairfield in 1941. They moved to Iowa City in February. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Association of Retired Teachers.

Survivors include her husband; one daughter, Janice K. SMITH of Olympia, Wash.; one son, James R. CUMMINGS of Richland; six grandchildren; one sister, Elizabeth COULTER of Ames; four nieces and one nephew. Her parents, one brother, Russell, and one sister, Annabelle preceded her in death.
