Mrs. Alva E. CUMMINGS, 87, died Friday at 7:25 p.m. at 207 E. Washington St. where she made her home with her sister, Mrs. George C. WOODS.
Mrs. CUMMINGS had been a resident of Fairfield for 78 years. She had been in failing health for several years and seriously ill for a month.
Last rites will be held Monday at 1:30 p.m. at the Weston Behner Funeral home in charge of Dr. C. R. Douglass. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery.
Mrs. CUMMINGS was born Sept. 30, 1872 near Burgettstown, Pa., the daughter of John C. and Sarah MARSHALL BARNES. She came to Iowa with her parents in 1881. She was educated in Fairfield and taught in Jefferson county rural schools.
She was married to William F. CUMMINGS Nov. 27, 1895. He preceded her in death Dec. 20, 1920. Mrs. CUMMINGS is survived by two children, Charles CUMMINGS, Fairfield; and Mrs. Joe H. McMARTIN, Des Moines.
Five grandchildren, one great grandson and the following sisters also survive: Mrs. George C. WOODS, Fairfield; Mrs. Dwight McGAUGHEY, Keokuk; and Mrs. Ray KIRKPATRICK, Oakland, Calif. Two brothers are one sister are deceased.
Mrs. CUMMINGS joined the First Presbyterian church in 1890 and would have marked 70 years of membership next January. She was also a member of Rebekah Lodge No. 96.
