Local Woman Dies In Highway Crash

Mrs. Robert O. CROSS, 36, Fairfield, was killed instantly early Sunday when the car she was driving went out of control and plunged into a deep ditch on highway 34 three and a half miles east of the city.

Mrs. CROSS, a Japanese war bride, was thrown part way through the windshield on the right side of the front seat. Officers said her death was caused by a skull fracture and other injuries.

Her husband, Robert CROSS, 34, and two other passengers were also injured in the crash which occurred at 12:15 a.m. Sunday near Bethesda Methodist church.

Tried To Pass

Investigating officers said Mrs. CROSS was driving west in a 1957 Plymouth when she attempted to pass another vehicle driven by Paul Quick, Fairfield. The right front corner of the CROSS car hooked the left rear corner of the car ahead, causing Mrs. CROSS to lose control.

The CROSS car plunged over a steep embankment on the left side of the roadway, rolled over once and came to a halt on its wheels in a deep drainage ditch west of the Bethesda cemetery.

Quick said he felt a slight impact, but he had no trouble controling his car. He stopped a short distance down the highway after he saw the CROSS car leave the road.

Head Cuts

CROSS, a passenger in the right front seat, sustained head cuts and bruises. He was released after treatment at the Jefferson County hospital. The CROSS car was demolished by the crash. The front end and engine were shoved back toward the front seat on the right side.

Other passengers in the car were Betty Armstrong, 14, Fairfield, Tom Young, 20, a student at Parsons college, and Susan CROSS, 14, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. CROSS. Miss Armstrong received a cut on the right leg and Young sustained a back injury. The CROSS girl was unhurt.

The accident was investigated by sheriff's officers and the High way Patrol.

Services Tuesday

Services for Mrs. CROSS, 102 W. Grimes, will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Weston Behner Funeral home. Rites will be in charge of the Rev. Lee E. Davis with burial in Evergreen cemetery.

Mrs. CROSS, the former Fujiko IKEMI, was born March 12, 1926 at Fukuoka, Japan, the daughter of Yozo and Keyo IKEMI. She was married to Robert O. CROSS May 4, 1947, at Fukuoka.

Mrs. CROSS came to Fairfield 10 years ago. She returned home Sept. 1 after a month's trip to Japan to visit her family. She was employed at the Universal Producing Co. for nine years. She was a member of the First Christian church.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. CROSS is survived by the following children: Susan; William, 12; Linda, 9; and Robert Jr. 7. Also surviving are her mother, two brothers and two sisters in Japan. Her father is deceased.
