LockridgeLawrence Monroe LINGENFELTER, 96, of rural Lockridge, passed away on Monday, November 2, 2020, at Arbor Court in Mt. Pleasant (note: in Henry Co., IA).
Monroe was born on February 26, 1924, at Canton, Illinois, the only son and eldest child of Henry Banks & Fern Marie (HARPER) LINGENFELTER. At the age of 11, he and his family moved to rural Lockridge, where he completed the 8th grade. At the age of 21, he was drafted into the United States Army during World War II. He served from March 9, 1945, until December 6, 1946, as a light truck driver, stationed in Okinawa, Japan. This was the first time Monroe had been on a boat and away from the farm. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Iowa and worked on the farm. Monroe was a man who worked hard and was willing to lend a helping hand, sometimes worked just for a hot meal. He lived simply and was a content man. He loved his cows, cats, his bibbed overalls and even an occasional opossum. He loved music, playing the guitar and piano.
He was united in marriage to Mary Jane SICKELS on November 30, 1978, in Keosauqua. They enjoyed 10 years of adventures together before her death on March 22, 1988. Monroe would often been seen (sic) walking to where he was going, he found his tractor was always more reliable than his truck or car.
Monroe is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, great- and great-great-nieces and -nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and his sisters, Hildreth NEBERGAL, Helen WILLIS, June JENNINGS, Betty HELTERBRAN and Ferna GARNER.
Funeral Services will be held on Monday, November 9, 2020, at 10:30 a.m. at the Murphy Funeral Home of Mt. Pleasant with Pastor Aaron Helterbran officiating.
