On Thursday morning, March 23rd, at ten minutes after eight o'clock, Joel Evans CAMPBELL died at his home in this city. He was seventy seven years old to a day.
Mr. CAMPBELL was the son of William Passmore and Catherine POOL (sic - POOLE) CAMPBELL, and was born in Washington, Washington Co., Pennsylvania, March 23, 1822. His father died in Pennsylvania in 1825, and his mother, who always afterward made her home with her son, died in this city in 1875 (sic - 1874). Mr. CAMPBELL grew to manhood in his native town and in 1845 came to Jefferson county and purchased a claim of 400 acres about two miles north of this city, 100 acres of which he retained at the time of his death. He returned to Pennsylvania soon after coming here, however, and made a second trip to this county in 1847. He again returned to his eastern home and on April 13, 1848, he was married in Wheeling, Va., to Miss Anna E. CRAWFORD. Of this union six children were born,--William P., who died September 3, 1893; James and Crawford, who both died in infancy; Samuel M., of Omaha, Neb.; Eugene, of Los Angeles, Cal.; and Anna, who married J. M. WHITHAM and died in 1895. Soon after his marriage, in company with James Eckert, he established a general store in this city and in 1850 he brought his family to Fairfield. His residence and store were on the present site of the First National Bank and he continued in business there for a number of years. In 1875 he moved to his farm north of town and resided there until his wife's death which occurred in Omaha, Neb., on July 17, 1894. That fall he went to Los Angeles, California, and spent the winter with his son Eugene, returning to this city only a days before the death of his daughter in the spring of 1895. Since that time he had made his home in this city, caring for his daughter's children. Since his wife's death his health has not been good and this winter he had been gradually growing worse. He had been suffering with the grip for some time and on February 16th he had a slight stroke of paralysis. He recovered from the immediate effects of this, however, but did not regain his strength. He kept gradually growing weaker, until two weeks from the day he was taken ill he quietly passed away. He was unconscious for several days before his death.
The funeral took place from the residence last Friday afternoon at half past two o'clock. Rev. W. J. Funkey and Rev. Dr. J. F. Magill conducted the services.
Mr. CAMPBELL was a man of strong personality and of most independent mind. He had strict ideas as to his own integrity and uprightness and he demanded the same high standard from others. But beneath an exterior somewhat brusque he was most tender hearted, and in his own way he as kindly and helpful. He leaned more than he himself realized until after her death, on his wife, a sweet and gentle woman, and since her death he had felt her loss most keenly.
