N. J. CALHOUN KILLED AS HE BLASTED STUMP
Body Was Found By Neighbors About 10 O'clock Last Night

Newton J. CALHOUN, one of Jefferson counties (sic) well known farmers, was found dead about 10 o'clock last night in a cornfield where he had gone to blast a stump, it is reported.

Mr. CALHOUN left the house after dinner stating that he was going to the field to dig a stump. when he did not return in the evening Mrs. CALHOUN became alarmed and notified two of the neighbor men who sent in search of the man. After sometime the men found his hat by the stump. They at once notified other neighbors and with flashlights and lantern they returned to the cornfield. About 10 o'clock the badly lacerated body was found lying face down 40 feet from the stump.

It was not known that Mr. CALHOUN carried dynamite with him but a hole at the side of the stump proved that he had attempted to blast it. One neighbor told of hearing the charge between three and four o'clock. The watch which Mr. CALHOUN carried had stopped at 3 o'clock.

The body was brought to the Hoskins funeral home, arrangements pending word from relatives.

Mr. CALHOUN is survived by his wife and one daughter, Esther, who is employed in Cedar Rapids and one brother in Long Island, N. Y.

Last summer the CALHOUN family moved from this city to their newly constructed home on a farm just west of No. 9 school. Mr. CALHOUN was serving his second year as treasurer of the Jefferson county Farm Bureau in which organization he took an active part. He is also an official and an active member of the First Methodist church of this city and a member of the Brotherhood Bible class.
