MRS. SARAH BIRT

Sarah C. BIRT daughter of the late John W. and Elizabeth DILL DuBOIS, was born June 21, 1855 in Jefferson county, Iowa, on the homestead of her pioneer parents now occup ed (sic) by her son N. S. BIRT and wife. She departed this life at her home, 807 South 2nd St., Fairfield, Iowa, Thursday, March 11, 1943 at 10:30 a.m. being at the time of her death 87 years, 8 months and 20 days old.

Mrs. BIRT united with the First Christian church of Fairfield in her early girlhood and retained her membership there during her long life. While not being able to engage actively in the life of the church for a number of years, yet she kept in close touch with its affairs. Her parents were among the charter members of the local church. This, no doubt, served to increase her keen interest in the church and its place in the community.

Sarah DuBOIS was united in marriage to John James BIRT, Sept. 2, 1891. Her husband preceded her in death in May 1910. To this union two children were born, Nathaniel S. BIRT and Miss Ona May BIRT at home. Being of a ret ring (sic) nature, Mrs. BIRT's chief interest in life was her home and the happiness and welfare of her family, for whom she felt the sole responsibility after the death of her husband over 30 years ago.

She is the last surviving member of a family of six brothers, Thomas ,Ruben D., Theodore Polk, John W., Nathaniel and Cornelius DuBOIS, also two sisters Charlotte and Mary (Mrs. A. D. ROBERTS). Besides her immediate family, she leaves to mourn her loss a number of nieces and nephews and a host of life long friends who sadly accept the passing of another pioneer.

Funeral services were held at the Hoskins funeral home last Saturday morning conducted by S. P. Williamson, minister of the First Christian church of Fairfield. Mrs. Williamson sang the hymns with Mrs. Wm. Stever at the piano. The remains were interred in Evergreen cemetery by the side of her husband. Pallbearers were Charles Brown, D. M. Holgate, John DuBOIS, Will DuBOIS, Charlie Summers and Ross Anderson.
