TAKES LIFE EARLY TODAY

Ed BATES, 71, retired Jefferson county farmer, took his own life by hanging early this morning at the farm home of his son, Clifford, about six miles northeast of here.

Mr. BATES had made his home with another son, Harley W. BATES, 803 East Burlington street.

The body was discovered sometime between 5 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. by Clifford who notified Sheriff H. F. Goodale and Coroner J. W. Castell. Authorities said this morning there would be no inquest.

Mr. BATES had placed a letter in his pocket, telling of the act. He went to bed at the BATES home in Fairfield Monday evening but got up about 12:30 a.m. and walked out to the farm where he arrived about 2:30 a.m., according to the letter.

His body was found hanging from a rafter in the granary on the farm where he had placed a board between an automobile and a barrel in the drive then kicked the plank from beneath him after fastening a rope around his neck to a rafter above.

Authorities said Mr. BATES had been despondent since the death of his wife some time ago.

Edward A. BATES was born July 13, 1868 in Jefferson county. He is survived by two sons, Harley and Clifford, both of Fairfield; a brother, Perry O. BATES, of Fairfield, and by five grandchildren. His wife passed away on March 31, 1931.

Mr. BATES had been in failing health the last several years. He moved to Fairfield from the farm on Dec. 1, 1938.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at Hoskins Funeral Home in charge of Dr. M. A. Gable. Interment will be in Evergreen cemetery.
